These are closer to torque converter gearboxes in terms of how you operate them. You'd operate it the same as dual-clutch.

They have a traditional manual gearbox but with an automatic clutch the same as dual-clutch, except there's just one clutch. These are awful and thankfully not really a thing anymore. 99.999% of the time, the car is just going to be in D. This is only really useful on the road if you're going down a very long hill and you're using engine braking. In these cars, you can either put it in D and let the car do all of it for you, or you can put it in manual mode and choose which gear you want to use. One clutch deals with gears 1, 3, 5 and 7, the other deals with gears 2, 4, and 6 (assuming it's an 7 speed). They're like a traditional manual gearbox, except it has two sets of clutches which operate automatically without clutch pedal. Automatic Golfs have been using one form of DSG or another since the MK5 in 2004. This is more than likely what the Golfs have that you're looking at. It does go by many names though as different manufacturers use their own version with a trademarked name, but ultimately, they're all pretty much the same. I've never been able to fully understand exactly how they work other than using oil and witchcraft. So if you put it in 3, it will be able to use gears 1, 2 and 3, but not 4, 5 or 6 assuming it's a 6 speed.
3, 2 and L prevent the gearbox from going in any gear higher than what you set it to, but it can use lower gears. You'll be using D basically all of the time. This was the most common and it's what people think of what you say automatic gearbox. There's are 4 different types of mainstream automatic gearboxes. Think, having a regular manual gearbox but without a clutch pedal. Semi-automatic is a specific thing and very rare on cars. The people listing them under semi-auto most likely think that because you can manually select which gear you want either through pushing/pulling on the shifter while in manual mode or with paddles on the steering wheel, it's semi-automatic, but it's not. All of them have the same (or similar, it depends on the year) DSG gearbox. The difference between the semi-auto Golfs and automatic Golfs is the way that they're advertised by third party dealers/private sellers. This includes YouTube videos clearly showing you street racing, or doing a 0-100mph sprint on a public road.
